HM PRISON SHREWSBURY, THE DANA GAOL GHOST HUNT, SHROPSHIRE, Friday 30th November 2018, 10pm-3am
HM Prison Shrewsbury was a category B/C men's prison in Shrewsbury, Shropshire which only closed its doors in 2013! Built very near to the Dana Gaol, a medieval prison, HMP Shrewsbury is often referred to as ‘The Dana’. There has been a prison on the site since 1793, the original building being constructed by Thomas Telford the present building was constructed in 1877. The prison took female convicts until 1922.
Between 1902 and 1961 seven people were executed by hanging within the walls of HMP Shrewsbury for the crime of murder, in almost every case the murder victim was female. Executions took place at 8.00 am and all executed prisoners were buried in unmarked graves inside the prison walls. In total, between 1795 and 1961, 71 men and 2 women were executed at Shrewsbury Prison!!
In 2004 a Member of Parliament called for an enquiry into the number of suicides which had occurred at Shrewsbury Prison. This came after 3 inmates had hanged themselves at the jail in 2 weeks.
In 2005, it was reported that Shrewsbury prison was the most overcrowded in England and Wales.
Following a report in 2012 the prison reform trust awarded Shrewsbury prison second place in England and Wales for overcrowding, holding 326 prisoners in space designed for 170 men.
In 2013 the closure was announced; the last inmates were taken from Shrewsbury to other prisons on 27th February 2013 and completely closed in the March.
With so much incarceration, overcrowding and life untimely ended at the prison, what still lurks in the shadows of this huge facility of justice???
Reports of heavy poltergeist activity are probably the most daunting, doors slamming shut on unsuspecting visitors, objects thrown and loud bangs sounding throughout the prison are enough to leave you on edge!
Is it the hangman who is often seen watching from the window of the execution area? Or is it a spirit of one of his victims, hung by the neck for their crimes?
Much is still to be learned about the prisons spectral inhabitants, join us for a night to remember!
